Golden year for Andy Murray

For Andy Murray 2012 marked a golden milestone, for Novak Djokovic the year was an emphatic reminder of his status as the world's best male player, and for Roger Federer and his army of fans it was proof that the old master's magic still sparkles. Murray went into London 2012 still looking to win one of tennis' biggest titles after falling just short at Wimbledon in July, where he lost to multiple champions Roger Federer in four sets after reaching the final for the first time.

Of the sport's marquee names, only rafael nadal will reflect on the past year with regret after six months out with a knee injury, and all eyes will be studying the 11-times grand-slam winner's form once the new season swings into action. Nadal, one of four different winners of the men's grand-slam titles this year, has not played a match since a shock Wimbledon defeat by Lukas Rosol.

Murray began it with a new coach in Ivan Lendl but still without a grand-slam title on his CV having lost in his first three major finals without taking a set. The British No 1 almost made it two gold medals on the same day but had to settle for silver in the mixed doubles with teenage partner Laura Robson.

Sachin Tendulkar to play in ODIs

Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar has intentions to play in the upcoming one-day series against arch rivals Pakistan and the subsequent series against England, a television channel claimed on Friday.  The 39 years old star batsman says he does not plan to quit the format altogether just yet and will continue as long as he enjoys the game.

Tendulkar has played just two ODI series after the World Cup last year. The channel said he wants to play in the ODIs to regain form ahead of the high-profile Test series against Australia in February-March next year. The channel talked to former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly on Tendulkar's decision to play in the ODIs.

On the criticism about Tendulkar’s form, Ganguly said “critics don’t matter. It’s what selectors think and BCCI think. Sachin is too big for everyone. What he has achieved is beyond everybody’s reach. He has the ability and the right to call the shots”.

Virat Kohli to replace Dhoni as captain?

Virat Kohli And Dhoni

After Sunil Gavaskar, it’s the turn of another former India skipper to call for captain MS Dhoni’s head. Controversial former spinner Bishan Singh Bedi demanded the sacking of Dhoni, saying he is too defensive as a captain. Apart from Gavaskar, several former cricketers including former chairman of selectors Kris Srikkanth, Atul Wassan and Abbas Ali Baig wanted a change in Test captaincy with Virat Kohli's name being suggested as a possible replacement.

Bedi has said that “He was never a Test skipper. He is far too negative, especially while setting fields. His success had a lot to do with providence”. Bedi further added that it is right time to throw the challenge of leadership to promising cricketer Virat Kohli.  Bedi also criticized Indian spinners, saying that they looked more of shorter versions’ bowlers. "They look more like four-over bowlers.
